New Netscape.com = Digg.com Plus

AOL, owners of Netscape.com, have approved a retool of the portal that will have a Digg.com look-and-feel, but cover a broader range of topics than the tech-focused Digg. (Although Digg itself announced it was broadening a bit just last week.) The new Netscape is in public beta right now, just reaching 1,000 members as I'm typing. Users enter small blog-like entries to interesting news stories, which can then be voted on by the community. Those with the most votes hit the home page. Jason Calacanis, who sold AOL Weblogs.com, Inc. a while back, is running the new Netscape and says he'll have a team of bloggers who follow the most popular stories with interviews and on-the-street reporting.

I have no idea where to post this, so I'm following up your most recent entry.

You co-authored Leo Laporte's Guide to Mac OS X Tiger. After twelve plus years online, I'm still getting used to people such as yourself being so easily accessible. I'm 49 years old and remember a world with no internet.

Speaking of old geezers, I miss Leo Laporte on Tech TV. He should be on the Today Show. Why isn't he the Al Roker of consumer gadgets and PCs? Wow, he even knows about OS X. And Linux and open source, too.

But enough about Leo. This is YOUR blog! Do you still like Camino? I like Camino 1.01 and Safari 2.03. Visiting the Netscape.com website using Camino made me chuckle in a geeky way.

I'm glad that I bought a "stealth" Mac mini (1.5 GHz G4, 64 MB VRAM) instead of a first generation Intel mini. The transition to Intel will be a success in the long run, I think, but a few bumps along the road are to be expected.

What do you think of Yellow Dog Linux? I'm tempted to dual boot it on this puppy.

Tell me about Mississippi. You're a native? Is it a good place for a writer to live, work and struggle? William Faulkner thought so, I guess.

Hi TCA, thanks for writing. Yes, Leo is a great guy -- and he's actually still on TV for TechTV Canada (yeah, I wish I was in Canada, too). Check out his blog at leoville.com and twit.tv, and you'll see him *constantly*. :-)

Yup. I'm still using Camino...for some reason I seem to leave Safari and Camino open all the time, but Camino is a favorite of mine.

I haven't had enough reason to pop YDL on a machine recently; I remember when it came out I was pleased to see someone talking Linux on Mac seriously. I like ubuntu for its simplicity of setup...although, to be honest, I did end up blowing it off that server and using a straight-up installation of Tiger; it turned out I needed some Mac specific server stuff on there.

G4 Mac mini -- good call. I'm still casually in the market for one on eBay.

Mississippi -- not a native, I've been here five years. It's a great place to struggle, as I've been doing while launching jacksonfreepress.com with my partners. Low cost of living, cheap beer, relatively cheap gas...it has a lot to recommend it, including the fact that it's the epicenter of American music and Jackson is a fun town to hang out in!
